A memorial service is a time to remember, reflect and honour a life. While it is naturally a time of deep sadness, it can also be an opportunity to celebrate the treasured moments, personality and memories that made someone special.

The right music creates atmosphere

As a funeral director, I have often seen how music can transform a memorial service. When words feel inadequate and emotions are difficult to express, a familiar song can tell part of a person’s story.

Keep in mind that there are no strict rules when choosing music. A traditional hymn may bring comfort to one family, while another may find greater meaning in a favourite song their loved one played while driving, relaxing or spending time with family. Sometimes, hearing that familiar melody brings back a smile, a memory or even a moment of joy.

Remember the time…

When selecting music, ask yourself:

  • What did they love listening to?
  • Which song immediately makes me think of them?
  • What music best expresses what I feel but cannot put into words?

Your answers may help create a playlist that feels deeply personal and a farewell that reflects the unique life being remembered.

Music is more than something played during a service; it becomes part of the memory itself.
